The Scene: Denver Fashion Weekend Photos

Denver Fashion Weekend was a style infused scene, be it boutiques, models, show producers and the attendees (if we do say so ourselves!). Featuring spring 2011 looks from the international designers and local names, the models rocked the runway at the Exdo Event Center in Denver's warehouse district. Friday, the high fashion night, was highlighted by the top of the line labels and insane choreography from Charlie Price. Saturday showcased street fashion, bringing to the stage break dancers and looks fit for for the concrete runways of any city, production by Sara Ford and Autumn Binion. Denver Fashion Weekend will no doubt make it's return next year after a such a successful turnout.

The Scene: Denver Fashion Weekend

After much anticipation, the first annual Denver Fashion Weekend is set to take place this weekend. Launched by 303 Magazine, the two nights of style will include runway shows featuring looks from international and local designers, as well as a guest list filled with attendees who are passionate about our city's up-and-coming sartorial scene.

With DFW just days away, styling for our portion of the runway show is underway. Featuring our favorite looks from Helmut Lang's Spring 2011 collection and paired with jewelry from one of our favorite local designers, The Woods, Goldyn will present on Friday night with a handful of other Denver-based high-end retailers. We are sure the event will be a success and prove that in Colorado... it's not all about hiking boots and cargo shorts.

Spring is just around the corner (fingers crossed), and over the weekend we at Goldyn wrapped up one of our favorite photo shoots: the spring look book. Featuring the newest arrivals from Helmut Lang, Rag & Bone, Cynthia Vincent and Vince (among others), we worked to capture the essence of the upcoming season's styles.

Set in a remodeled ranch home (owned by The Woods jeweler Shawn Hecox and her husband Evan Hecox), the backdrop offered an eclectic mix of mid century and contemporary decor. The theme: a Denver girl in her chic pad and even chicer threads. The result: some beautiful images that have us super psyched for springtime.

This past Saturday Cluster Studios celebrated the 4th anniversary of Matthew Morris Salon that benefited the Rocky Mountain Cancer Center. The show featured 70 different looks styled by Vanessa from Goldyn. The show also featured many different talented people like Janine, Faatemah, DJ Craig C, and the show was hosted by Shequida.

The show started out with the first section of the 'boyfriend look' followed by military, menswear, bling black, and then flat black.

Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent is a gorgeous line of modernly feminine clothing, shoes and handbags that are designed with every woman in mind. Vincent’s designs are instant classics that are always on-trend yet maintain a classic aesthetic. Her flirty frocks, romantic silhouettes and sleek fabrics are designed to bring confidence to any woman. Vincent designs with form, fit, function and fabrication in mind and is known for incorporating unique hardware and contrast stitching into her designs.

Educated at Otis Parsons School of Design, Cynthia won the venerable Silver Thimble Award and quickly garnered praise and applause from the fashion industry. After working at several design houses, she finally launched Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent in 2003.

After huge success and rave reviews, Vincent added a shoe line. Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent soon attracted a loyal celebrity following. As mentioned in last Friday’s post, this week the Shop Goldyn blog will feature a series of designer profiles leading up to Westword’s Artopia on Saturday, February 20. Goldyn is thrilled to be part of this year’s Westword Artopia! We are partnering with our good friends and local faves DVLP Clothing in a spring fashion show that you won’t want to miss! Goldyn will debut the latest looks from some of our favorite designers and labels, including Helmut Lang, Chloe, Rebecca Minkoff and Kain Label. Artopia is next Saturday, February 20 from The show starts at 7 p.m. at Vinyl (1082 Broadway).

Artopia is a night of art, food, music and fashion. This five venue block party (City Hall was just added as a venue!) will begin at Vinyl at 7:00p.m. and end at 10:30p.m. The party continues at Mo's, Bar Standard, The Living Room and City Hall across the street from 10:00p.m. to 2:00a.m. A portion of the proceeds benefits a local charity. ShopGoldyn.com operates out of a fabulously modern and industrial-style space in the RiNo (River North Art District) section of Denver. Our showroom is located in one of Denver’s most innovative developments known as TAXI, an abstract and ever-so-appealing mash-up of living spaces, storefronts, restaurants, design studios and exercise facilities. Upon calling TAXI our new home, we became lucky enough to share our showroom space with an amazing artist named Susan Wick. While Goldyn fills half of the space with offices, retro sitting spaces, and of course our radiant selection of designer clothing, Susan’s side glistens with her interesting and inspiring collection of colorful pieces. Susan’s art brings a certain energy to the space, with a mixture of colors, textiles, objects and designs which create a lively buzz within the showroom that allows for a pleasant and stimulating work environment.

I sat down with Susan Wick for a delicious lunch at TAXI’s restaurant staple, Fuel Café, to get to know this esteemed local artist who has recently become my workspace roommate. Luckily for me, Susan was an open book. She talked with ease about her life, her passions, her art background and her future. Listening to her stories was not only interesting and insightful, but also a sheer pleasure.

Susan was always interested in art, yet in the beginning she never saw it as a viable profession. After growing up in Madison, WI she received her undergraduate and masters degree in Occupational Therapy at NYU, then proceeded to buy a loom, and headed west to California. Susan had heard that women were teaching weaving courses out west, which sparked her interest in returning to school. This time, Susan was invited to attend school at UC Berkley to study textiles. She worked as a therapist through her schooling, yet still continued her art on the side.

Susan does not prefer any specific medium; in fact, she enjoys a wide array of mediums including textiles, ceramics, painting, and mobiles using reclaimed objects – mixing and combining to make her pieces truly her own. No matter what the medium, though, her pieces are always colorful and always convey a certain joy and light-heartedness that seems to be ever-present in the artist. Despite her range, though, Susan admits that she is most attracted to texture, textiles and cloth. She started out creating sculptures, but the tubing and rags needed to create her pieces proved rather difficult to store. Susan also worked as a performance artist for a while, which she enjoyed mostly for the aspect of costume making and textile design. One of her pieces ran in the window of Macy’s in San Francisco for a few months promoting their house ware products.

During her stint in California, Susan traveled to India where she studied textiles on a grant, and then explored Paris for a year and a half, staying in a luxurious flat while taking courses and continuing her art. She also spent time in Japan making books. Book making became one of her favorite mediums, as she was able to transcend the boundary of visual art and writing, allowing for her art to flow through words as well as images. This talent for book making was discovered through documenting her thoughts, ideas and inspirations for her art, in what was the closest thing to a journal that Susan claimed to have kept at the time.

So how did this worldly, accomplished and fascinating woman become Goldyn’s roommate? Mickey Zeppelin, a renowned developer and the brilliant mind behind TAXI - as well as many more of Denver’s notable structures - has been a lifelong friend of Susan’s. They had always discussed the idea of collaborating, and after many years of an off-and-on long distance friendship, the timing was right for a reunion. Susan had just finished a project in Palm Springs when Mickey invited her to Colorado to help construct a tile floor for a bookstore in downtown Denver – one of the first businesses to open up in what is now commonly referred to as “LODO.” Susan left immediately, and drove herself to Denver for the construction, which ended up being an ongoing project within many downtown buildings. During her work with Mickey, Susan became very involved with the bookstore, and ended up making the Mile High City her home in the early 80’s.

As their friendship matured into a long-term relationship, Mickey and Susan moved into a living space and studio together that they call “Z.Wick Place,” a refurbished warehouse. Susan currently resides, works, and shows her art in Z.Wick, as well as in the showroom at Taxi. Named Denver Artist of the Year in 2006, Susan also presented an installation in the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art. Susan admits that lately her focus has shifted from art, and instead towards care taking for her family. Be that as it may, Susan’s pieces remain as amazing and timeless creations. Her fascinating life is apparent in each one of her works, and we are lucky to have such a talented and interesting roommate.

Nearing the end of our lunch, the ever quotable Susan let out a perfectly poetic strand of words that summed up her stories better than I ever could. “You spend your life finding your aesthetic, looking for one, identifying one…and then you just try to get away from it. The goal in life is always to stay in the present and have a good time.”

Goldyn Oldies: What’s Old is New Again
